1) What is the Enviro™ Cover System?

The Enviro™ Cover System is an Alternative Daily Cover (ADC) system for Municipal Solid Waste landfills which includes a nonreusable geosynthetic film cover, the Deployer (applicator equipment) and the method of application (or placement).

2) What is a Deployer?

A Deployer is the applicator equipment used to apply or place the Enviro™ Cover over the working face. Either self-propelled or blade/bucket mounted, Enviro™ Cover Deployers attach quickly and easily to a range of Prime Movers commonly used in landfills or are stand-alone machinery (the Model 800).

3) How does the Enviro™ Cover System cover the waste?

In the cover process, Enviro™ Cover is unrolled from the Deployer while ballast material (soil, gravel or sand), is simultaneously discharged at controlled rates to securely anchor the film to the working face.  An adjacent panel of Enviro™ Cover is placed along the previous layered panel creating an overlap sealed by the adjacent ballast material. This process continues until the working face is covered.

4) Does Enviro™ Cover require retrieval or removal?

No, unlike using removable geosynthetic tarps that require retrieval before the start of the next day’s operations, Enviro™ Cover is non-reusable geosynthetic film (classified under ASTM D6523-00) and does not need to be removed.  Enviro™ Cover will continue to act as a barrier between the waste and the environment until it is destroyed when new waste is placed over it.

5) Can the Enviro™ Cover be applied in rain and adverse climatic conditions?

Yes, the Enviro™ Cover System's application performance and rapid coverage are unmatched in all kinds of adverse climatic conditions, especially in rain, wind, snow and freezing temperatures.

6) Is it difficult to apply Enviro™ Cover in windy conditions?

Not usually, Enviro™ Cover System Deployers release the ballast (anchoring material) simultaneously onto the film as it is being unrolled onto the working face and extra ballast can be deployed in strong winds to more securely anchor the film.

7) Can Enviro™ Cover be used for prolonged coverage periods?

Yes, Enviro™ Cover is available in different grades to satisfy the life span and coverage performance required for varied time periods. These include Daily Enviro™ Cover (DEC - up to 7 days), Extended Enviro™ Cover (EEC - up to 4 weeks) and Intermediate Enviro™ Cover (IEC - up to 6 months).

8) How is Enviro™ Cover applied or placed onto the working face?

Enviro™ Cover films are applied using one of EPI’s patented and patent pending Deployers which are either self-propelled or attach easily to the blade or bucket of a range of Prime Movers commonly used in landfills.  The film panels are unrolled from the Deployer while ballast (anchoring material) is simultaneously released from the Deployer to anchor the cover securely onto the working face.

9) What benefits does Enviro™ Cover have over other commercial ADC systems?

Although most landfill cover systems meet the minimum regulatory requirements, Enviro™ Cover provides the utmost control for disease vectors, fires, odors, blowing litter and scavenging.  It effectively prevents rainwater from infiltrating the waste, minimizing leachate generation and providing an impermeable barrier to prevent landfill gas emissions through to the next placement of waste. 

Placement is not hindered by adverse climatic conditions and coverage is rapid and efficient, without the need to be retrieved before the next day’s operations begins.  So as a daily cover application, it requires less manpower and lowers operational costs.  Its volume takes up almost zero airspace, thus extending the life of a landfill and allowing for increased revenue.

10) Can Enviro™ Cover control landfill gas?

Enviro™ Cover improves landfill gas management and helps control air pollution problems resulting from odors and greenhouse gas effects.

11) Is Enviro™ Cover an impermeable material?

Yes, Enviro™ Cover is a polyethylene film and is technically impermeable.  Tests show that properly placed panels with a continuous ballasted compression type overlap seal can be 98% effective as a barrier to prevent infiltration of precipitation and to facilitate gas containment throughout the regulated cover period and beyond. Enviro™ Cover is capable of providing an effective barrier for days, weeks or months.

12) How does Enviro™ Cover perform in the rain?

Placement of the Enviro™ Cover in rainy conditions is not hindered at all and out-performs the others. Its impermeable barrier provides for excellent water runoff to promote lateral drainage and effectively controls the infiltration of precipitation into the landfill throughout the regulated cover period and beyond.

13) How effective is Enviro™ Cover at preventing landfill odors from escaping?

Enviro™ Cover is a plastic film and the method of application ensures that an effective seal is created, providing a continuous closure between the waste and the environment.
